Julian and Anna’s Quilt Commission December 25, 2023

Julian and Anna rented me my first studio almost exactly six years ago at 33Arts. It was small, affordable and precious. I loved the big old building and all the artists I met there. Over the years as my business organically grew, I took over the spaces next to me and my little studio grew too. My creativity soared, y'all have witnessed and supported me in all the ways.

This summer I realized I needed more space and a shift in energy, so I made the choice to move. It's been a hard but good transition. Hard because I truly miss being near Julian and Anna and their kids Leo and Charlotte, good because I have more space and less distractions.

I got to visit with them yesterday to give them the quilt they commissioned years ago through accumulating a rent discount each month. It's kinda funny how I wasn't able to make the quilt until after I moved out, but the retrospection was part of the magic.

At one point Julian had said they wanted their quilt to be a metaphorical map of 33Arts, and I forgot he said that until yesterday when I watched them open the quilt and Anna said "look at all the portals!" And I realized this quilt is 100% a map of cosmic portals, which is exactly what 33Arts is: all the artists in their rooms connecting to their own creative stream.

I chose some black because they have two solid black silly dogs, who inevitably will try to touch the quilt. So thank you to Julian and Anna for all you did for me while I was a fledgling artist. I could go on for pages describing all the ways you offered advice, support, camaraderie, ideas, tools, kids, pets, clowns, goats, and sunsets. Enjoy your Sabel Quilt.
